Welcome to the Ivy Street School and MAB's Brain Injury Department!
Students
The Ivy Street School in Brookline, Massachusetts was founded in 1993 to provide comprehensive educational and treatment services to adolescent (ages 13-22) boys and girls with acquired brain injury or other challenging neurological difficulties.
We strive to connect our services and support to the unique needs, dreams, and beliefs of each child and his/her family at the point where they are at in their journey after injury. First, and foremost, the Ivy Street School is a place to fit in. All staff understands and expects the problems, whether visible or hidden, each adolescent may struggle with. Peers offer support rather than ridicule, because they share each other’s struggles.
The Ivy Street School is also a place where each child can receive the individualized focus he/she requires in order to overcome their challenges. Each student benefits from an extraordinary level of personalized and tailored services, including:
- Academic Instruction from certified Special Education Teachers
- Small class size and teacher/student ratio (5-6 students per classroom)
- Vocational Instruction, including a Culinary Arts Program
- Physical, Occupational, and Speech Therapies
- Neuropsychological Assessment
- Cognitive Remediation, including the teaching of compensatory and executive skills
- Individual and Group Psychotherapy, including Expressive Arts, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

Families
Ivy Street is also a place for families. We recognize that the enduring and sustaining relationships in each child’s life exist within the structure of the family. We also recognize that a brain injury doesn’t just happen to a child, but to his/her family as well. An injury to a child can be an isolating and disruptive change in life for each member of a family. The Ivy Street School is open to families on a 24-hour basis and we welcome family participation in any of our activities. A Family Advisory Committee meets each month. Ivy Street offers Family Therapy, as well as a monthly Family Support Group where information and feelings can be shared across families.
