Vision Community Services: Low Vision Clinics

MAB and the New England Eye Institute (NEEI) partner to offer two low vision clinics, in Worcester and Springfield, Massachusetts. Dr. Carolin Toomey-Gitto, O.D. and Dr. Louis A. Frank, O.D., F.A.A.O. are Low Vision Specialists affiliated with NEEI who provide low vision refraction assessments.

The low vision exam provides important information about how a person functions in everyday life, and clients learn to maximize their usable vision generally with optical devices. Also, follow-up appointments in the home with a MAB Occupational Therapist or Case Manager will ensure that individuals who have purchased adaptive equipment will use it properly and that their home environment enhances their level of usable vision.

There are many benefits to visiting MAB’s Low Vision Clinic. First, the Low Vision Exam is highly specialized and eye charts and tools are specifically developed to determine if the client can benefit from optical devices. Also, MAB offers an array of other services to help those dealing with low vision: case management, adaptive equipment, Occupational Therapists, support groups, volunteer assistance, and other community resources are available and discussed with clients. Most importantly, the assessment does not end in the clinic, but is taken into the home to help with activities of daily living.
