Brain Injury Residential Services
While some of our students commute to school each day, more than half live at the school in Brookline, Massachusetts. Residential living gives our students a structured environment and extra time to focus on the life skills and community skills needed to become an adult. We teach algebra and science, but we also teach money management and budgeting, laundry, community mobility, hygiene, and cooking. This focus on life skills and community skills is one of the advantages of our residential setting.
The Ivy Street Dormitory
Located in the same building as the School, the dormitory has a boys’ wing and a girls’ wing with separate bathrooms. Each student has his or her own room. The dormitory has laundry facilities, a small kitchen, and recreation/leisure rooms where the students listen to music, watch television and movies, play games, and have community meetings.
Transitional Living
The Cottage Farm Program is an off-campus apartment located in the same neighborhood as the School. It offers a transitional living opportunity for eight students who are approaching graduation and need experience with self-management and independent living. The students attend the Ivy Street School during the day but go to Cottage Farm for their meals, grocery shopping and leisure activities. The apartment has 24-hour staff support but is less structured than dormitory life.
Young Adults (22+)
In small group settings of two to four individuals, young adults are supported in continuing to develop and practice social, work, and life skills as they expand their participation in the community at large. In these programs, operated in conjunction with the Massachusetts Statewide Head Injury Program, residents receive medical and therapeutic services through community providers and develop friends and activities in many walks of life. Our staff members assume a role of mentoring, support, and case management as the young adults create their new lives.
