Volunteer Services

MAB has a legacy of Volunteer Services that goes back more than fifty years. 700 Volunteers currently serve our consumers or work in our programs.

Volunteers are matched One-to-One with consumers and assist with shopping, reading and clerical tasks, as well as friendly visiting. Volunteers offer a friendly, confidential and reliable source of support in consumer's homes and places of employment.

Volunteers are interviewed and screened and attend a three hour orientation before being matched with a consumer. They learn about blindness, its causes and related issues, as well as the rights and responsibilities associated with volunteering.

The Central MA and Western MA offices offer Medical Transportation for consumers who are unable to use public van services because they need a sighted guide escort to travel safely.

Leisure Time Activities (also in Central MA and Western MA) help consumers remain active participants in their community. We offer 1-2 activities monthly, such as theatre, museums, walks, luncheons, crafts, etc. In Central MA, a candlepin-bowling league runs from September until May.
