Low Vision Clinics

MAB and the New England Eye Institute (NEEI) partner to offer low vision clinics in MAB’s Holyoke and Worcester offices. NEEI-affiliated optometrists provide low vision assessments in a clinical setting with adaptive techniques and training taught by an occupational therapist. The low vision exam provides important information about how a person functions in everyday life, and patients learn to maximize their usable vision, often with prescribed optical devices.

Additionally, follow-up appointments in the home with a MAB occupational therapist or low vision specialist will ensure that individuals who have purchased adaptive equipment have the training to use it properly and that their home environment enhances their level of usable vision.

There are many benefits to visiting MAB’s Low Vision Clinic. First, the low vision exam is highly specialized and eye charts and tools are specifically developed to determine if the client can benefit from optical devices. MAB also offers an array of other services to help those with low vision. Most importantly, the assessment does not end in the clinic, but is taken into the home to help with activities of daily living.

Clients are responsible for any co-pays, deductibles, refraction fees and costs of any devices. Read our helpful document What to Expect at a Low Vision Clinic (PDF).

"I have a large window in my apartment and the glare makes it very difficult to read. But the case manager from MAB showed me how to use special sunglasses to make it easier to read my mail. And she gave me a large print calendar to write all my appointments on—it’s worth its weight in gold."
