Since 1973, MAB has provided supports in a range of residential and vocational settings in the Greater Boston and Central Massachusetts areas for adults with developmental disabilities, brain injuries, and secondary disorders such as blindness, deafness, behavioral challenges, cerebral palsy, and issues related to aging. Our experience allows us to help adults with diverse needs maximize their independence and enjoy the best possible quality of life. Hundreds of young adults graduating from special education and many individuals with brain injuries leaving nursing facilities become eligible for state-funded employment and residential supports in Massachusetts each year. Local businesses and organizations partner with MAB to provide innovative vocational, volunteer and recreational opportunities. Positions Available

Boston Skyline

Residential Counselor – Residential Counselors provide support to small groups of men or women living in a community residential setting with the goal of maximizing their capacity for personal growth, independence and community membership consistent with their individual support plan. Responsibilities include assisting our participants with their daily living skills, transportation, administering medication, and supporting them in their goals for community access and independence. Individual Supports-Adult Companion -The Adult Companion provides support to participants with brain injuries and other chronic conditions in their homes with the goal of maximizing their capacity for personal growth, independence and community membership consistent with their individual support plan. Responsibilities include assisting participants with their daily living skills, transportation, accompanying them to medical appointments, grocery shopping and carrying out any other chores as necessary. Individual Supports-Case Manager – The Case Manager provides support to participants with brain injuries and other chronic conditions in their homes with the goal of maximizing their capacity for personal growth, independence and community membership consistent with an individual support plan. Responsibilities include managing finances, medical case management, landlord relations, and community participation in line with an individual’s support plan. The pay rate is $15.61 per hour. One to One Vocational Coach –This unique program is entirely based in the community and supports participants as they re-learn skills necessary to reach their vocational and educational goals. Duties can include resume writing, interview prep, on the job shadowing, transportation, and employer relations. These positions are daytime hours with the salary being $15.00 an hour. Recruitment process

  • Send your resume and cover letter to Shaun Kinsella at skinsella@mabcommunity.org.
  • Informational sessions will be posted online. This is an opportunity to receive more information and to ask questions of the presenters. Informational sessions will take place via Microsoft Teams. Please ensure you have access to a computer/tablet/phone with a camera and attend with the camera on.
  • All initial interviews will take place with one or more of MAB’s recruiters using Microsoft Teams. You should make sure you have access to a computer with Teams capabilities, such as a camera and headset, and test it out prior to your interview. Appearing to be prepared goes a long way when making a first impression.
  • Second interviews will also take place using Teams and will involve one of MAB’s program managers.
  • MAB conducts Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) check and fingerprint-based checks of the state and national criminal history database for all current and prospective employees. The first of these checks occur after a conditional offer of employment has been accepted.
  • MAB has a zero-tolerance policy for drugs and alcohol. Prospective employees are required to submit to a pre-employment drug test and must return a negative result in order to obtain employment.
  • Some programs require staff to complete and submit the results of a 1-step TB test and a physical examination. Results will be accepted so long as the exam occurred within the previous 12 months.
  • Driving is an essential part of an employee’s position. While a majority of our programs are equipped with transportation suitable for its individuals, some positions require the use of personal vehicles. All applicants will need a valid driving license and be expected to sit the Massachusetts driving test after arrival.

Accommodation

  • All new recruits will be provided with temporary accommodation near the main Adult Disability Services Office or near one of our community programs. Accommodation is basic and is likely to be at an Extended Stay. This consists of a single bedroom with a private bathroom and kitchenette. The first month will be provided for free. The second two months will be provided at a $500 charge. After three months, recruits may find their own accommodation or continue to rent through our partners at market rates. Recruits to the Boston and Central Massachusetts areas should conduct their own research into the affordability of accommodation in the area as it can be expensive. Not all worksites are in the city and maybe in outlying areas.
  • MAB may provide reimbursement for Uber for the first month. This will be on a case by case basis and be dependent on the location of accommodation, the location of the worksite, and the shift pattern assigned.

Training

  • Orientation – New staff attends New Hire Orientation for a minimum of three days. The largest portion of this training takes place at the ADS headquarters in Allston. Training is provided by nurses, clinicians, orientation and mobility specialists, and other leaders in their field.
  • CPR and First Aid – All recruits should be CPR and First Aid certified before starting their position with MAB. Staff members are responsible for maintaining active certifications at all times.
  • MAP – Most positions require the staff member to be able to administer medications responsibly and accurately. Therefore, staff is required to be certified in the Medication Administration Program (MAP) within the first six months of their hire and maintain their certification. MAP training classes are provided at MAB. MAB is also a testing site for MAP certification.
  • CPI – Everybody can have a bad day. MAB staff need to know how to respond safely and compassionately when this happens. MAB provides Crisis Prevention and Intervention training to all staff focusing on de-escalation techniques.

What will the first few weeks look like?

  • Recruits will arrive in Massachusetts on a Monday. They will have the opportunity to settle into their accommodation. Current MAB staff will be available to take all new recruits for dinner in the local area on Sunday night.
  • On Tuesday new recruits will come to the main office and meet with Human Resources. They will complete any necessary hiring paperwork and sign up for benefits.
  • MAB staff will be available on Monday and Tuesday to orient new recruits to the local area and the transportation systems.
  • Wednesday to Friday will be new hire orientation training for all new staff at the main office.
  • The following week new recruits will receive specific program assignments, including hours and locations. They will have the opportunity to meet with their new manager and visit the program.
  • The second week will consist of shortened shadowing shifts, while new recruits continue to orient to the location and to their new program. This week is also an opportunity for any program-specific trainings to be completed. These may be done at the program, in the office, or on-line as appropriate.
  • In the third week, recruits will begin their regular schedule.

COVID Precautions:

  • All plans for training and orientation are subject to change based on the current needs and COVID positivity rates.
  • All new recruits will be expected to self-isolate on arrival. A saliva PCR test will be administered and isolation will end when the results have been received.
  • Trainings and meetings may be delivered remotely via Microsoft Team and MABs on-line Learning Management System. These trainings may be delivered while new recruits are in isolation.
  • All new recruits will be expected to abide by COVID regulations in accordance with State recommendations.

Providing a buddy:

  • Each recruit will be offered a buddy. The buddy will be a current staff member and may have been a recruit in the past.
  • The role of the buddy is to answer your questions before you arrive. Email them with all those lingering questions about the job and about living in Massachusetts.
  • Your buddy may also be available to help orient you when you arrive. They are a friendly welcome to your new life.
  • You will also be put in touch with other recruits that are arriving around the same time as you so that you can make accommodation plans, travel together, or just get to know each other.
